help please
I have a few questions. My brakes and rotors for my 02 A4 TQM are squeking, so i'm planning to replace them with performance brakes and rotors from awe-tuning.com (zimmerman cross drilled rotors front, mintex brakes for front and rear). somebody told me that crossdrilled rotors brake easily, especially in cold weather. a). is this true? i dont do any crazy driving with this car and i know zimmermann is a good company, should i worry or not? b). Can i install these myself, i have not done this before, but willing to try it? are rotors hard to install? c).i have 110k on my car, yes, i know it's a lot for an 02, but i like driving it. what kind of oil do you recommend? is there a high mileage synthetic oil that would be good for my car? somebody told me to run 5-40w diesel oil in the car as it has more additives to clean the fuel system, is this true, has any of you done this? d). also, my car has been giving me worse mileage than before, could this be caused by it needing an oil change? if not, what else could it be? e). last question, how good are those $200 intercoolers i keep seeing on ebay (made for 02-05 audi 1.8tq)? sorry for the long letter, i'm just not mechanically inclined, i know that some of these questions might sound stupid. Thanks for any input.
they are squeeking so you're replacing them?? why don't you try to spray some break cleaner on them first???
ah, whatever.
umm, I wouldn't recommend installing break rotors yourself unless you're pretty experienced in working hands on with your car. Have you ever replaced the break pads?? it will be harder than that. the other question I would have to ask would be, have you modded your engine at all?? without engine mods, and as someone who "doesn't do a lot of crazy driving" I don't see any reason why you would need drilled and slotted rotors....unless you just like how they look.
don't use diesel oil in your car. use sythetic. mobil 1?? castrol?? but not diesel. that should keep your valve train clean enough. and if you're losing a SMALL amount of gas mileage, it could be that you need an oil change....but it should be a VERY SMALL amount. otherwise you have other problems. see if you've got any leaks in your air intake, or anything else.
I personally wouldn't buy a $200 intercooler off of ebay. just my personal opinion.

+1 to most of what fastera4thanurs said....zimmerman drilled rotors are not going to break in cold weather (or at all for that matter)
really super easy to change your rotors and pads, you'll be able to find a good do it yourself on audidiy.com
0w-40 is prolly what you want to run, royal purple, mobil one, amzoil....
as far as your shitty mileage is concerned there are a few different things you need to check...firstly, you need to change your oil every 3-5k (depending on how ana! u are, I am scared of sludge so I change right before the 3k mark)....other things that can kill yourgas mileage are; air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, super hot weather, running your a/c, wether or not you always have your foot on the gas pedal, city driving/highway and traffic, how much weight you are lugging around...you should be getting an easy 380-420 miles to a tank....if you arent, your filters are dirty or you are flooring it everywhere you go (or sitting in alot of traffic)...
I am going to be going w an eBay intercooler, I think they are worth the 200$, while others may disagree, I don't care, because the next step after eBay is an $800 kit....I know there are at least 5 guys on here who have a custom eBay set-up and have no problems....but if you get piping over 2.25" in dia. you will have a definite 1-2lb. drop in boost....

+1 with quattroA4 for the brakes, oil and intercooler. spray brake cleaner on them first b4 u go buy brand new brakes. it solved my problem. and if u live near binghamton, just pm me and i'll do ur brakes for 100 bux. u get the parts.
to Nikellis14, i have an apr stage 1 chip, enough power for me, thinking about a ko4 setup soon, maybe stage1+, then k04. i've driven this car with the apr chip for almost 30k, and had no problems with the chip. APR IS AWESOME. i like to drive fast (high speeds on local roads, usually 15 miles over the speed limit, and i hit traffic many times, so i do need those brake rotors, and i've changed my order to hawk performance brake pads as i will soon upgrade the turbo, or so i plan. and no, it's not the brake fluid, i have less than 10% left on my rear pads and front also.
To qUaTtRoA4, i used to average 23-24 mpg with 30% highway driving, and 70% city driving (to me that was good), now i'm getting 21 mpg average. u also have to consider that i have a much heavier car than yours (the 02 TQMS weigh at about 3400lbs, yours only about 2800lbs), so you have a weight advantage mileage wise.
To all thanks for your input.
