Help with purchasing used Audi
Ive been thinking of purchasing a used Audi A4 B5 97-99 for sometime now but I dont know alot about german cars but one of my friends just purchased a 1998 Audi a4 1.8t and I love it and its made me want one even more i have about 7k saved up and have been lurking ebay and autotrader for about a month now and was wondering which model was better to buy the 1.8 or 2.8. Also I would like to know some things to look out for when im buying a used audi ill be getting one in the low 100k milelage range but I also have access to my dads performace shop which has a dyno 4 lifts and many other usefull tools but then again I dont know to much about german cars since its a gm high performace shop but I would very much appreciate knowledge on buying a used audi.

RE: Help with purchasing used Audi
search the forum and u'll get a lot of info. 1.8 if u want to mod it. 2.8 if u want more reliability, but almost no mods. get a 99.5 if u can. its got less problems than earlier years cuz some stuff was upgraded. timing belt needs to be done every 80-90k. if not the engine will blow up...well almost, it will total the car. control arms and other schiza like that too. like i said jus search

I would not buy a car that you can't inspect personally and take to a mechanic before you purchase. You also need to save up an extra 1500 dollars to have on hand to fix the problems that inevitably crop up in a used car when you buy it.

Get a 1.8, try to find one thats already had t-belt done, and of course as low miles as possible.
You also want to get quattro, and a 5 speed.
Other things you may ask about or have to deal with:
Possibly control arms or tie-rod ends at that mileage.
look for one with an excellent service history and documentation.
Good luck, thats sweet you have access to a dyno and lift, cause these cars are expensive unless you DIY most things.
They need a littl more tlc, but if you give them that, the are great vehicles, and a heck of a lot of fun to drive.
