Default help reprogram your own keys?

After reading a tech posting about reprogramming keys by using the "one in the door one in the ignition" method, I began to wonder if this would work for a totally new key(not an original that has simply become de-programmed for what ever reason[pressing the button repetedly when out of range]).

If you buy a key from one of those online distributors(and somehow manage to get it cut to match an original ::: eventhoughallI have is the valet) will it be possible to program it using the original key in the ignition and the new one in the door? And is there another(read: cheaper) way to get a key cut without taking it to Audi?

Any help (expecially if it helps me save time and $$) would be appreciated!

A regular locksmith cut my 2000 S4 a new key. If you have the original it will make is much easier on them. They also programmed the new key using my car without an old key.

So the answer to your questions should be yes and yes if our cars are similar enough.
