HOLY STEALERSHIP!

have you every work as a tech at a dealer and then at an independent shop? The dealership has specialty tools to make not only engine work easier but transmission work as well. Also tools for diag electrical, evap, and driveability issues. These tools are super exspensive making them harder to get for independent dealers. That and car makers make things even more difficult and wont offer most of them to anyone BUT dealers. Thus cutting the independant shops out of the mix and keeping dealerships alive. Its a $hitty thing but its the only thing keeping the dealerships alive. If my independant shop that I go to had these specialty tools then Id be able to get my radio code from them and as well as NEVER see the dealership. They are VERY capable techs and I have talked to them, but they are starved the tools they need to go fully independant.

I also worked at an auto service shop for 2 years, and seemed to have gotten labor done in the same or less amount of time than the repair manual called for, with regular old tools, nothing id call "special."

chasis ear isnt a special tool...I can go to harbor freight and buy one myself.

I condsider a tool tha is not common, or one that I dont normaly use like a screw driver, socket wreches, pliars, etc.. a tool that is special.
For ford Im talking about such tools as NGS cam tools, crank tools, flex plate tools(5.4l fro tranny and engine work), tranny mounts for jacks. Electrical diag connectors and such. Granted a chasis ear and borescope are "special tools" but you or me can go out and buy one therefore an independent shop can and will.

the only reason they are around is the specialty tools audis require. If it werent for stupid propriatery $hit like that then there would be no dealership

But try and find me an independent shop to work on an 04+A8L or a 05+A6 it is gonna take years for the independent shops to catch up with the technology in these cars
Well its also the fact the diag tools that plug into the obd port like NGS and VAG that automakers are either marking the price up on the tools or software or arent selling it to anyone but a dealer. It sucks I knwo I was there for it. But look at it this way if it werent for dealerships service prices being so high, then independent shops prices would be on the rise because of lack of competition.

Wow.. Just got off the phone with Audi, inquiring about a price for a valve cover gasket from them.. The dude said "a low price of $47.50"..... I just laughed, then he laughed, then I said "thanks anyway", he said, "yeah thats what i thought." Thats insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can get the gasket for $25 shipped, and take about a half hour or so to install it myself.. Where the total cost for the dealership would be about $120!!!!!!!!!! Hence the term: "Stealership" I'm still a little shocked, I think I'll go breathe into a paper bag so i dont start hyperventalating.
