how to check if...
So I bought a manual 2003 Audi A4 1.8T today with 78,000 miles. I've heard that the timing belt should have been changed around this mileage. However, since the purchase was done through an Acura dealer, we have no records of whether the timing belt was changed. Is there a way to check without taking the engine apart?
unless u can find records, no. even if u tear it apart, its next to impossible to tell because the belts dont show wear. they just lose a tooth adn go haywire. if u open it up adn see that the water pump has been changed, it is most likley that the belt was also changed. but i wouldnt risk it. if that thing snaps, there is a good chance your engine would need an entire rebuild or replacement
Yep, just replace it.
Or wait, and find a car with a service history. Audi + no service records = bad news for new owner.
If there are no records, insist the car be inspected by an audi dealer, so you know exactly what you are getting into. Its well worth it.
