Default How many miles are too hi?

I am looking to by a 1997 Audi A4 2.8 quattro. This one has 120,000 and I can talk him down to 7,500. As you can see everything has been done properly and it has all the service papers to go along with it? Will these cars if taken care of make it to 200,000 miles or more?

1997 A4 Quattro. 2.8L 5spd. Black on Black leather, tinted windows. Thule rack with wind deflector (and 2 negotiable bike attachments). Winter and sport package. Third owner. Nearly ALL highway miles. Timing belt, water pump, etc. done at 70,xxx. In the last 10,000 miles: New clutch, new front rotors and pads all the way around, and heavy duty A4 rubber floor mats (these are sweet for the winter because they are indestructable and easily cleaned). I have ALL the paper work for everything that has been done to this car since the warranty expired. I HATE to sell this car, but I NEED the money for school and travel. PLEASE make me an offer I can't refuse!!
Thanks for reading... (707) 477-2218, Nick

I am test driving it Saturday to make sure its what I want.

Thanks,
Nick

So the cars are capable of hitting 200,000 or higher if well taken care of?

Hey im new wooo hooo you some of you may have seen me in Audizine.com, DTWaudi.com, Wimatt.com, howardforums.com,notebookforums.com, I think thats about it

I would look around a little more maybe 120k is alot of miles. You should be thinking about how many miles a year you are going to be driving? Then remember that in 20k atleast you will have to do another TB change. If you are anything like me then in 2, 3 years max you will be right around 200k pry would be better off to spend an extra 3-4 g's if you can and buy something newer with less miles just my 2cents

I drive like 15-20000 miles a year, probably closer to the 20,000 mark with this because I would take it to tahoe every weekend in the winter. I dont really have the extra 3-4 g's, but I do have a little bit more to spend. I told him that it sounds like too many miles, but I would come test drive it anyways before making my decision. Thanks for the fast response.

I mean, I am sure there will be the couple times where I want to see how it performs, but in general it will just be a car to commute in and take me snowboarding every weekend.

I bet you can get it for cheaper than 7500... otherwise, I would be down with that car, and dont think its worth it to spend thousands more to save a few miles. Because this car WILL make it to 200K if its been maintained like you say it has... and really, the only things that you'll prolly encounter, are control arms... which are like a grand, and yes, another timing belt job, which is another grand. So 2 grand is all that I would forsee in big maintenance jobs... brakes can last a LONG time if they are OEM, and change the cabin air filter right away, if he hasnt... because the blower motor has a tendency to die, if the filter gets clogged.

But yes, getting 80 000 more miles out of the car is surely probable, if you continue to take care of it.

Oh, and the point i forgot to make, above... was that if you DO spend another 3 - 4 g's and get lower miles, there is a good chance you'd have to do a T-belt and control arms anyways... and the lower miles car might be coming due for brakes, clutch etc. So yes, try and get him lower than 7500... we sold our 96 2.8 Quattro black/black 5 spd, with 208 000 KM on it, with a set of winter wheels... and the monster mats, for like 8K CDN, and that was in november... and it was still running strong with original clutch, but did recently have the brakes, an control arms done.

Thanks for everything. I am going to try to talk him down to at least 7500. Once again thanks for all the info, it helped a lot. What are the symptoms of the control arms going?
