Saw this while driving home from work a couple of days ago:



When I got a closer look at the car, I noticed the quattro badge on the front & back of the car. I always thought that quattro is engaged all the time, but distributes power to the wheels as needed. How is it possible that the back wheels are spinning when the front wheels are tied down? Does quattro have some sort of syncro that makes the above possible?

either they found a way to disengage the quattro, which I believe is possible or the tranny is now shot to pieces.

wouldn't it be a PITA to manually disengage the quattro? And to answer SouRce4's question, I don't think neutral would do it. Neutral would just disengage the engine from the tranny. I'm betting the tranny is shot on this one.

maybe they just pulled off the driveshaft? its 12xM6 hex bolts and two 13mm bolts for the center and the driveshaft comes out in like 15 min, not too hard if you have access to a lift and air tools, or have a shop do it or something. cheaper than getting a flatbed trailer

To disengage the trans/diff you have to remove the driveshaft. Even then you shouldn't drive over 50 miles like that. I seriously doubt that was done here. Maybe its FWD, can't really see the quattro badge in the pic. Man I'd be fvcking pissed if that was my car.

Haven't you ever had your Quattro on a rack and turned one wheel? It turns free by itself just like it would by being towed on the rear wheels. Try putting power to it from the other side and the Torsen differential then puts it to all the wheels. If all four wheels were on the ground it might be a different story though.

So you wanna try it out with your car and see what happens? Even if the rear diff doesn't lock and theres no torque transfered to the driveshaft it's still creates excessive wear. Especially if the vehicle is moving at normal driving speeds.

Sure I wouldn't be afraid to do it cause theres nothing it could really hurt. Ask audiTech and see what he says about it. Just cause I don't have a post count like your doesn't mean I am a newbee. I been driving 15 years longer than you been alive and restoring muscle cars since the sixtys. This isn't my first dance.

That's what I was looking for after I took the pic. If it didn't have quattro badges, then I wouldn't have started this thread. Sure enough, the car had the quattro badges front & back.
