Default how to remove shift console?

1999 1.8T auto. How do I remove the shift console to get at the circuit for tiptronic shift? Do I pry up the colored dash piece or the chrome ring around the shifter first? Tried gently at both and neither seam to want tomove. Thanks in advance.

You have to get the trim out first, then the shifter **** by putting it into neutral, pull the button outwards enough to get a zip tie behind the button to hold it there and pull it straight upwards, the you release all four tabs for the chrome plated board and pull it straight up.

i have a B6 and you need to let the ashtray thingy's door open, then pry upward on the piece around the chrome shifter piece, then the chrome piece is actually held on with little snap-on clips that can be taken off with a screwdriver, by pushing in the tabs while pulling up on the piece also, if it is the same for the B5's i dont know but may be helpful to you...

ohh...and dont try to drive your car in TIP mode with all that off, it doesn't work for some reason, then when you get it all back together it will work again...

have fun,
