Default IFFY INSTRUMENTS

The rev counter is sometimes 'off', but a finger tap general gets it going again, which may be a poor or dry connection.

The fuel guage has a fluctuating reading - can suddenly drop by a quater of a tank, and later go back up again.

The temperature guage reads just above the lowest level (50), which surely shouldn't be?

So it looks as though we have an iffy instrument cluster, in one form or another. Has anyone else experienced these sorts of problems? And, if so, what comments would do you have please? For example, local Audi dealership suggests the fuel guage is a sender problem. And it appears that the rev counter has a bad contact somwhere, but does that mean the whole cluster has to be replaced in order to resolve the problem.

Received some helpful comments from Jas on AudiFans forum
http://www.audifans.net/modules.php?...&p=32506#32506
but if anyone else can add to this that would ge gtreat.

Thanks in advance.

Interesting problem.

The fuel gauge may or maynot be a problem. In my experiences with my fuel gauge, it reflects how many miles it estimates I have left in the tank. For instance, when I'm driving hard, the gauge reflects the estimated amount of miles I have left that my computer calculates and the gauge will read lower than when I'm just cruising. It's not instant, more of an average but I can still tell it goes up and down. So far its been dead accurate for when I need to fill up again.

Maybe I have a similar problem, but I don't think I'd have my gauge replaced since its still accurate.

Thanks T, but have to say - if I read you correctly - that it seems curious that the fuel guage should be used as an indicator of remaining miles available. We noticed last evening that when the car was filled up the fuel guage was initially only reading 3/4 full but, in a few miles on the motorway had gone to reading full.

Thanks for your input.

well if it is in fact the fuel gauge sender you can follow my tutorial in the "tech section" on replacing it. It's not really that hard, the part is about 70 bucks. If that doesnt fix it, you will know it is the instrument cluster. You have to start someplace. Replacing the cluster is goign to be the most expensive too. So I would start replacing the cheap things, like the sender and the temperature sensor.

Thanks very much Jestnomen. Appreciate your help.

Although second hand the car is under three months parts warranty, so it should be sorted by the vendor. However, it is very useful to know and understand what the source of the problem is.

Your URL leads to Ohio State University Airport, but where does one go from there to get to your Audi tech page/s?

Not sure what you mean, I don't have an Audi Tech page. The profile asks for a webpage, and I am the designer of that one.

Ah. I thought you might have meant a tech section on your own web site, rather than one on the forum. Sorry about that; just learning about these things.
