Default Ignition Switch Recall affecting Starter

To anyone more mechanically knowledgable:

My 1997 Audi A4 has one of the bad ignition switches that was recalled, and it recently went bad on me to where I could start the car, but had to movethe keyback and forth for other electronics to work. The first time this happened I didn't know how far to pull it back (as the spring was broken) and basically drove with the ignition switch in the "start" position.

The following day, the car would not start. I thought it might just be the bad ignition switch and took it in to have that replaced, but after they replaced the recalled switch, they informed me the starter was probably bad.

My Question: If the ignition switch is held in the "Start" position for an extended period of time, will this burn out the Solenoid or other part of the starter?

I'm thinking that because the switch went bad, it also burned up my starter solenoid or other electronic component. The Audi dealer where my car is stuck wants $1150 to replace this!

Any help !?!?!?

Thanks in advance!!!

Eric

I am not too familiar with this issue, but if it was stuck in 'START' did you hear the starter motor trying to turn the motor over. You usually hear that horrible grinding sound if you turn it to START when the engine is already running. If you weren't hearing that, I am not sure why you would have busted up the starter.

Its 1150 because you are at a dealer. Shouldn't you know better than that?
Call and get a quote at another shop, but it might be cheaper to pay to have the car towed to another shop to get the starter replaced than to pay for the dealership to do it.

Hello,

We're having the same problem with our Audi A4. When my wife took her car into the dealer ship to find out if there was a recall, she was told there wasn't one for this car. How do I confirm the recall.

Thanks

i had the same problem when i first got my car. i burnt out my starter cause i leftit the start position. i replaced the starter myself for about $150 plus a three year warrenty on the part. i will warn you though, if you have 2.8l 30v engine its quite the b*tch to get the stater in. it took me several hours of fiddling until it finally slipped in. $1150 seems way pricey. if oyu can't do it yourself, take it to a private mechanic. im sure you could find a place to do it for half that price.
