Impressions on do it yourself leather repair kit
For anyone who may have considered doing this I figured I would be the guinea pig. I purchased a do it yourself leather repair kit. I got the cheapest one I could find it was $18 shipping included from the as seen on tv products. The kit was pretty basic it came with several different colors, I had to mix the black and white to get the desired grey I wanted. I didnt get the colors to match up too good but I wasnt too concerned with that, I just didnt want the tear from getting worse. Im sure with a little paitenance I could have gotten the color match closer but I dont know if I could have gotten it to match perfectly.
The repair is on a leatherette surface, drivers seat in the middle of the outside leg support. I had a 1" cut that didnt go all the way through and few other smaller ones surrounding the big cut.
The repair was very easy to do it took about 15min that was including prep and cleanup. Basically clean the surface, mix the colors, apply the putty to the desired area. A textured cloth is supplied to place over the area that the putty was applied. I then applied a hot clothes iron to the spot for about a minute then pealed the textured cloth back off the repair. The putty was dry and the cracks were filled and sealed. Right now it feels like the normal surface, I am curious how well it will hold up over time and weather or not it will start to crack and crumble away. For anyone who may have a rip or tear somewhere I would recomend giving this a try, it is much cheaper than paying a pro to do it. I know there are some places that will match the color you have in your interior and send just the color you need but they were much more expensive. I just wanted to keep it from getting worse.
