Default Information Center Help

Hey guys, I'm new here, just picked up my Audi today, will actually be driving it home on Tuesday. 01 Black on Black 1.8t FWD. Yeah, yeah, I didn't know better to get the quattro till I came here about 30 minutes ago[:@]

Anyways, I figured I'd ask and see if anyone else has this problem and if anyone knows a good solution. The information center thing, screen, where it shows how many miles you have left on the tank, etc, looks like a cell phone that has been through the washing machine, if you know what I mean. Kind of fading out in lines. You can still KIND OF see the numbers, but I'd like it to work perfectly. The previous owner told me that it does that for a month every once and a while, and it'll go back to normal periodically.

Anyone know what to do?

Yea that screen is notorious on Audis. The pixels start to fade and the whole thing becomes illegible. I've heard that you can have it rebuilt but don't know if theres much truth to that. The only solution is to replace the entire instrument cluster.

So basically just a new cluster? Any idea how much they run? Thanks.

Can anyone confirm the fact that they can be rebuilt? I'd like to keep the low miles on my cluster[8D]

It depends if it is fading or there are missing lines or pixels. The fading I believe is due to failing electrolytic capacitors. I've been hoping someone would have an old screen I could play with. New one from Audi runs about 600, I believe. Replacing the capacitors would run about 3 dollars for parts.
