Inner CV joint...repack bearings?
So I removed my front axle to replace the cv boot and 2 bearings came out....I know how it happened, I messed it up. My question is, can the bearings be repacked our do I have to buy a new axle? I need to get this fixed by Friday, so quick responses help. Thanks in advance.
yeh i did the same thing on my outter boot. actually after seperating the joint i took the whole joint into my kitchen and popped out all the bearings and everything, washed everything down with brake fluid cleaner til there was barely any grease left. then just re assembled the joint and refilled it with all new grease. been a couple thousand miles since then, and 3 or four road trips of 200 miles a piece, nothing has gone wrong yet, and no sounds. just make sure the bearings dont look like they have scratches all over them, otherwise they might be done for. GL and if you have any other questions just post on here, ill check back
So I don't have to take it anywhere to get pressed back in? I can just repack it myself at home?? The inner joint looks like a bigger pain to work with than the outer. Can the inner joint come off the axle?
Nothing should have to be pressed. I did it with my outer CV joint.A few bearings fell outwhen packing the grease. Once all the bearings were clean I was able to put it back togeather. I had to take the cup/housing off the axle...take the rest of the bearings out...and put it back together from scratch. There is a wrong way toput it back together which can be tricky because everything goes back smooth likea perfice fit but the mechanics of the CV are not correct. I googled CV rebuild (orsomething like that) and found several pistures and write ups on the correct way and the incorrect way. Once I had the picsthere was nothing to it. Once it was back together I usedtwo small zip ties (in the bolt holes)to hold it in place until I was ready to line the bolts up to the trans...then cut the zip ties and put allthe bolts in for the instal. This was about 5,000Mi ago and no problems. Make sure the gloss finish on the roller bearings are 100% perfect.
