Default Installed Boost Gauge, high boost?

Firstly my car is a 2001 a4 avant 1.8t, sport package, 5sp, quattro, 80k on the clock. my car always felt stronger than my bros(1.8 passat, echaust, chip, etc) and i figured it was because i have the updated engine(180 vs 160 or something), i have the AWM and i think his is the AEB. all i have done is a k&n panel.

anyways i finally got my boost gauge in(routing the lines sucks) i did a diy vent gauge, i have my template done, now i just gotta glass a mold and make it cf, but thats a diff topic. when i put the gauge in and started it up it idled with vac at only about -10 to -12. boost goes up to 12psi in 1st and 2nd, up to about 13 in 3rd, haven't gone faster than that tho. so could this mean that a previous owner chipped it? how can i check? pop it open and look? faulty gauge maybe? thanks.
any input appriciated

Hmm thats intresting. The owner that had my car before me had chipped it. But they removed it before i got the car. My boost was normal (around 7 to 9). Your vac is not normal though, you should be around 20 vac not 10 to 13. That makes me think you would have a leak somwhere but your boost seems to be around where it should be with the 180 hp engine (seems a little high but thats not a bad thing). You should def invest in a chip though its like night and day! good luck.

oh i forgot to mention that im at about 8000 ft elevation, so that might play a little into the vaccume readings. do chipped ecus look any different than stock ecu? as in does it say APR or GIAC or whatever on a chip somewhere? thanks guys

ps ill post pics of the carbon fiber pod assembly in a new thread when it gets finished.

possibly a leak in the wastegate vac line. That will cause increased boost and the low vac that you have
