Installed Short Shifter No 5th or Reverse
Ok, so I didn't really install my brother did, and to give him street cred, he did sucessfully pull the motor and replace it himself, in a parking lot. But back my problem, 1-4 gears work fine. Can't shift into 5th or Reverse. We collabaratively spent about 6 hours on it and couldnt get it fit right. And he took no reference marks. The shop in Pittsburgh says I have wait 2 weeks to get me in, but if anybody is in the pittsburgh area, and can help me out that would be great.
my first guess would be wrong ss, that’s what any shop would tell you…
to double check it put back your stock shifter or at least disconnect ss and from under the car put it into 5th and reverse gear,

Sorry, it's a 97 a4 1.8t
Its definately the correct model, we checked it twice.
Basically the throw is just too short on 5th and reverse. When I shift into 5th gear spot, it actually shifts back into 3rd. I would take it to the shop that specializes in VW's and Audi's, but they gave me a two week time span. I have to call an Euro Import repair shop tomorrow morning and see if they can pencil me for tomorrow.
We actually tried reinstalling the old shifter, and had the same problem. I figured and experienced aftermarket Vdub shop would have ran into this problem many times and would have already solved it in a snap.

Not sure if it's same on B5, but if it is, did you mark the screw placement on the old shifter before installing new?
On the B6's, if you don't do that, it could take weeks of fine tuning to get it to work.
There is a huge Audi following at another Audi forum site in their north east forum. Titled "Pittsburgh People" thread, itis actually the longest and most viewed thread there. Plenty of local B5 people to help. We'll all be doing open lap days out at Beaverun this Sunday, too, if you're out northwest of the city.Don't want to rain on this forum's parade, so I won't mentionthat forum'sname public-like. PM me if you want to know.

did you adjust it correctly. cuz on the b6 there are 2 bolts thatt hold the shifter from moving off center..its directly in the middle. make sure both of those are center..and tight
We did the swap becuase we bought the car from a guy who blew the engine (rod went through the block), the parking lot was just the only place he could do it because he bought it in state college, and it woul dhave been a fortune to take it all the way back to my permanent address with my parents. We bought a brand new block, and had almost every valve replaced (bent). The guy we bought it from is a certified audi tech (atleast he works at the audi dealership), and he was amazed that my brother could do all this. The car drove perfectly before the SS swap. It took a while to put in the motor, just because we were waiting on parts for so long. Otherwise the only other mods we have is a fidanza flywheel and stage 2 clutch. I'm going to try to take it apart today again and maybe get it to work.
