Installed Short Shifter No 5th or Reverse
The trick is to align the shifter correctly. First of all, put it in neutral. Push it straight forward and it should slide into 3rd. Pull it back and it should slide into 4th. If it doesn't, you need to adjust the shifter by loosening the two bolts (one that holds the entire shifter assembly in place, and one that attaches to the shift rod going into the tranny). Position the shifter and adjust the bolts so the ball joint is centered when it is in neutral, and you have an equal throw to 3rd and 4th. Tighten the bolts (not too tight yet) and then test 1st, 2nd, 5th and reverse. If you can't get into any of those gears easily, you'll have to move the entire shifter forward or back and then recenter. Rinse and repeat until it works smoothly going into all gears, then make sure to tighten down the bolts good and tight so they don't slide during hard shifting.
