Default Installing Sound System

My car has a six disc changer in the trunk. Is it a pain in the *** to install new head units in these Audis? Special Tools? Reccomendations? Cuz it looks like I am gunna break stuff all around the head unit. And if i do get a new head unit can the changer be integrated with it? Also has anyone hooked up subs using the stock Audi head unit??

1999 Audi A4
1.8T

Thanks,

JP

Replacing the head unit does require special 'keys'... you can get them at crutchfield.com
AFAIK, you need to get a blitz adapter to use the OEM changer with an aftermarket head unit... or maybe blitz adapters are for using aftermarket changers with OEM head units... I can never remember. They are $$$ though.

And yes lots of people have installed subs with stock HU's... search the forums.

yeah u will need to get a special trim kit for u radio, and yes u will need a keys for audis that will slide right into the lil slots and no ur cd changer can't be intergrated into ur new cd unit.

I installed an alpine 9855 but removed it because it didn't flow with the interior like my stock radio. The only problem I had was the wiring harness didn't work for the rear speakers. With the harness installed the rear speaker wires aren't even plugged in at least not in my '99.5. Not to mention my rear left speaker has a circuit board on with like 7 wires coming out (damn Germans lol). I plan on hooking up amps to my stock HU soon. I've seen the adapter you need to buy but I can't remember. It seems like it may be made by blaupunkt or something. If you find it or anyone else knows let us know.

I think I saw the adapter in a Summit Racing catalog. Last week.

changing the headunit is easy, tools will probably come with the wiring harness, you'll need an antenna adapter and if its a bose system with an external amp you'll need to either hardwire it (send a signal to each speaker) or bypass it with a kit, those are both $$. for a cd changer blitzafe makes a kit to use an aftermarket cd changer in a stock headunit setup, i put one into my brothers 3 series. you can hook up subs, acually an amp, using a hi lo converter ~ $30. this converter will change your regular speaker wire (rear speakers or factory sub) into rca cables, this is how i ran my system.
