instrument cluster question
My car is a 2000 A4 and it has the typical burned display screen. Not a huge issue but I'd like to fix it if I can do it cheap. Can I simply swap out the whole cluster with one from a parts car?
Thanks for any help.

You can't change the mileage in the cluster after the initial mileage has been burned into the cluster. You would need a brand new cluster or there are companies that take them apart and replace the computer board that stores the mileage, but the dealer can only send the clusters to those companies.
Yeah, I know you can take it to the dealer and have the board replaced, but that's way more money than it's worth. I was hoping to find a car and swaping the whole cluster. I really don't care if the odometer is accurate, I don't think I'll ever sell the car and we don't have inspections here so it doesn't matter if there is a discrepency. So the real question is whether I would run into any other problems other than an odometer discrepency?
Could you just replace the screen? Like swap the screen out from one cluster to the other? I have a lot of electrical experience and I don't think it would be that hard.

Ok, I tried switching them and it does not work. They are soldered on to the main board. I guess if you wanted to de-solder it you could do it but I didn't feel like it.

I remember reading somewhere on this forum, or maybe audigeek or something along those lines that there is some special tools/equipment required to switch the lcd screens. I figured that switching the actual cluster would be even easier, even if it could be just soldered on.
Does anybody out there have 2 a4's and would be willing to try to swap the clusters just to see what happens?
