Default Issue with keyfob / transponder.

I hope someone can shead some light on this..

I have a used 2004 A4 Avant which I bought a number of years back with only one key.

Recently the key has only intermittently been remotely locking and unlocking the car meaning I have to open the drivers door manually and then turn on the igntion before the alarm goes off.

I assumed the key was at fault and arranged to get one from the key cutters in Tesco as they had just started doing them and they were a good price.

After a failed attempt where they ordered the wrong chip (they discovered that the 04 A4 needs an A6 chip?) they still failed to program the key as their equimpent could not communicate with the car in order to program the chip.

Has anyone come accross this before? What could it be? And what will an Audi dealer be likely to charge to put it right?!

Thanks for any help,
Nick.

I looked up the blank keys for both 2004 A4 and A6 and the flip style key is the same part number. Both have the same chip inside too, as in the picture below. There is a midyear split in 2003 for the remote transmitter for your A4. So be sure you get the later 2003 and up 4 button remote. Both choices are 315 mhz and 4 button, but the part number is different between the two remote transmitter choices.

Your dealer might charge differently than we would. We would get 143.50 for the whole key (vin cut flip style portion, plus the 4 button remote, these snap together to make one key) plus 120.00 to program the key to your car or it won't start the engine. I called an independant shop in our area and they told me they can't program the immobilizer portion of the key but they can program the portion on the pc board that handles the lock/unlock buttons. Maybe the vagcom experts here can answer if they can program the key or not.
