this might be a noob question and it sort of is, but it is topic related

is a k04 just plug and play, hardware wise, or do you have to change alot of stuff?

Stock your car has a KO3...A KO4 is the next step and for most it is the favorite, because it spools quickly (compared to a big turbo) and it is a direct replacement for the KO3. but when you upgrade to KO4 you should go for software and if you are looking for big power take a look at the pc-16 package:

good luck!

PC16 for 99.5 and earlier (requiresfull exhaust, injectors, fmic, larger maf housing-(i think)
J31 for 2000 (fmic, full exhaust)
Hammer for 01(fmic, full exhaust)
and i think there is a basic file (less aggressive) for all years dependant on your ecu #.
All k04 setups also require use of tip chip, if applicable, for driveability/reliability.
Youll need a hardware/installation kit (new gaskets, studs, bolts=about $40)

Try to use the search - this has been talked about 40402023042349 times.

98A4QT- Depends on your drive train. Tip front trac (fwd) is weak and is rated at 228 tq. max. and tip quattro is rated at 310 tq max. Youll be at about 265-295 tq depending on which k04 file you get.

if im wrong about any of the correct supporting mods for different files someone correct me, but im pretty sure all that is right.

This is what you will need for the PC-16 file.....

The following is a list of the mods that are required for the PC16 file: [ul][*]FMIC that will keep IAT's below 50 degrees Celsius.[*]3 Bar Fuel Pressure Regulator.[*]31 lb \"red top\" Bosch Motorsport injectors.[*]02 sensor with less than 50,000 miles on it.[*]Spark plugs with less than 10,000 miles on them.[*]Fuel Filter with less than 50,000 miles on it.[*]A clean Air Filter. [/ul]
