if its all true which I doubt danny would lie to you, he's a reputable guy and KMD does some good work then i would bring the car back and tell them that its fvcked up and you want your money back or your taking legal action, i belive this falls under the lemon law. btw where in jersey are you from?

I'm from Essex County. I can't get the car refunded because I got it through a used car auction for used car dealers. It was sold As-Is which means you are screwed if it gets messed up.

ORIGINAL: Genix

Well I bought a 1999 Audi A4 1.8T AQ about 3 weeks ago. CEL was on and there was an exhaust leak. (Only two problems I could see.) The car had 101,000 miles on it.

I took the car to KDM tuning to get everything checked out and I was shocked at what they found.

Here's the list of problems Danny gave me (shortened):

Car needs Oil pan, gasket oil pump, oil cooler, oil cooler hoses (2), oil change (syn), rear wheel bearing, prop seal, Tensioner gasket, valve cover gasket, tune up, timing belt and all parts, cat conv, motor mount and camshaft sensor.

He estimated all this would cost around 5300.

Here's my question, is it worth doing this? I love the car but it does have over 100k miles and was hoping you guys could give me some insight since I am not really in the know about Audi's.

Thanks.
Sorry to hear all this. first of all, let me say that I hope you learn from this experience. Anytime you buy a car, if you are not very mechanical, you should have taken the car somewhere to have it looked over BEFORE you bought it. Not to smart buying a car with a cel on, and not even having it looked at.

I see it was an auction. Kind of hard to return then, or have looked at.

OK, enough of the lecture, i am sure you are kicking yourself already.

So, can you do any of this yourself? and how vital is some of the work? Is the car losing oil real bad? or just leaking a little? Is the oil pressure low?

Oil pan - how bad is it?
Oil pump - is the pump not working?
wheel bearing - DIY
timing belt - bite the bullet and DIY $250 cam sensor here too.(80)
Oil change - DIY
prop seal? dont know what this is - cat conv? what is that? Have a new cat put in at a muffler shop, not too much $$$ maybe 200.
valve cover - DIY

If i were you, I would start learning to DIY real quick. Most of the stuff here you can do yourself. We can help you through all this stuff, none of it is real bad. Maybe try to tackle one project each weekend until you are done.

If you just absolutely cant DIY, then i would look around for an import shop that can do some of this cheaper. The tuner shop, while probably good, is also going to be real expensive. Find a small VW shop somewhere, people on this forum can help you find a reputable shop that wont be as much.

You may spend a few thousand overall, but 5300 is real steep. When you are done with all this, the car should last you another 100k easy, so i wouldn't feel bad about putting the money in it. But next time, make sure you take the car to a mechanic before buying it.

Good luck to you. let us know how it turns out. And if you decide to DIY, i am sure we will be hearing more from you as you learn.

Just a note, WHENEVER a mechanic says you need a "tune-upo" ask him specifically what you need. becuase with msot new cars, like ours, they are computer controlled. you dont tune them at all. so unless your drivin a old non-computer car (;like 95 or earlier gernarally) make sure you know exactally what their doin for the tuneup, so they dont scam ur a$$

Well the oil is leaking pretty bad. I have never really done any automotive work so you can probably understand my nervousness of trying to DIY. Plus I wouldn't know where to start, which part is the most important? I still do not have the car inspected so I need to get the CEL off quickly. The KMD guy said it was from the camshaft sensor. Should I try that first?
