Key programming ?
I bought my 03 A4 with just one key from a dealer. Since I cannot program this myself without the second key would a VW dealer be able to program this or will I be required to have another key cut and the remote programmed from an Audi dealer? I would like to avoid the $160 key+remote cost right now.
Damn, go back to the dealer and insist that they make you a second key and a valet key for that matter. You should get all the keys. You should have two switch remote keys and a valet key. IF they only gave you one then you could probablly complain and get your other keys.
I'm going through the same problem. I bought my A4 about 3 weeks ago from a VW dealer and the battery on the remote was dead and they told me they could not reprogram it. They told me I had to go to an Audi dealer to get it fixed. I could get another laser cut key from the Audi dealer, just the key, no remote, for about $60, whereas the remote w/ key is about $150. Needless to say I haven't had time to go get my remote fixed but hope to do so in the next week or so.
i've seen some instructions on programming remotes online...i don't think it's that hard.
also, keep ebay in mind.
i got a keyblade for like 12 dollars from this guy who cuts blades based on digital photos you send him of your current keyblade...the guy is amazing.
he sent me my new blade in like 3 days, over from the UK.
send this guy a message:

also, you can buy the remotes online for around 50-60 dollars and program it yourself. search for directions online.

OMG!!! your story is like de-jay-vu! i also bought a 2003 a4 18.8T with only one key! i bought the key blade and blank off ebay and went to VW to cut the key, but they couldn't program it... and Audi wants $100.00 to program it!!! i am gpoing nuts because i cant figure out how to porgram it. if you find any info,, drop me an email... mbenetto@msn.com
I'm not too sure on Audi's, but my parents had a Jeep that needed a new key, and it needed programming too.
They took it to a local locksmith and he programmed the blank key for $30.
I'm not sure if Audi takes a special computer to program (knowing Audi, it probably does), but a locksmith is a definate route to explore.

I had a reply to this when mbenetto started a thread.

I'm in the same boat myself...
I only have one key, but I want a second, and also want it to be programmed. When I went to the GTG I heard there was someone in So. Cal that could reprogram keys, but I didn't get any contact information.
