Default Key Remote

I've purchased a 1998 Audi A4 that has power locks and security system. It came with only one key. How can you tell if it is compatible to a key remote? Also, are the keys transponder keys? Does a person need to go to an Audi dealership to get a 2nd key?

Thanks!

On my drivers key for my 98 A4, there is a button right on the key. Can anyone tell me what it does before i have to resort to looking it up in the owners manual

Open up your remote with a little screwdriver. You will see an FCC ID code. You can pick up lots of remotes on ebay. Just make sure the FCC ID's match. US remotes did not come with the immobilizer so you can program them yourself. You can figure it out by searching the forums for instructions. it comes up every week.

Not to sound ignorant, but is the little button on the key a remote button?? I tried to use it once but thought, "Naw, that can't be the remote!" Please let me know!

Oh wait are you talking about the key with the round button? My 97 came with one, It was just a button for a built in light. I thought you were talking about buying a switchblade key remote.

Actually, I was inquiring about a remote. I don't know how to tell what remote I would need because all I have is the one key with the light. The previous owner didn't indicate such but said they couldn't find the other key they had for it.

Thanks!

I've purchased a remote on Ebay. It is a used one from a 2001 Audi TT which indicated it was good for Audi A4. I do notice that it has a trunk release button on it which I'm sure my 1998 A4 does not have power trunk. Anway this is the one I got: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...e=STRK:MEWN:IT
I can't get it to work!! Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Why does my '01 A4 not have a remote trunk? I thought my moms old '01 Passat had a remote trunk, was it avaiable on the A4? I dont mind the button thing...but o well!
