Klonking sound from rear
Today a sound started that is a knock from reverse into 1st. It only happens sometimes, but it seems to happen more often when the car sits for an hour or more. When I reverse and come to a stop, like out of a parking spot, then put it in first the car does not move for a second and then kloncks(sp) and continues on like it never happened. BTW its a 97 2.8 A4 Quattro with a manual transmission. It also sounds like its coming from the rear. Any ideas? Thank you.
My friend had a similar problem, his reverse gear was getting stuck and was only released when it went into 1st and made a loud clunk noise... as far as i know he brought it in and they replaced the setup... sorry dont have much more information than that

So, did you check for leaks to find out why you are low on differential oil?
While you are checking things, when is the last time you drained and filled our transmission oil and your front differential oil.
Your car is telling you it is thirsty!
