Lights, HID, etc
Hey everyone,
I am very glad that I found this site. I am a slightly new Audi owner. I own a 2002 AUDI A4 1.8t with 32,000 miles. I have a question for anyone that is knowledgable or has experience getting new lights for A4's.
I just bought KOBA H7 8000k blue 55 wattHID 'xenon' lights for my car. I know they aren't real xenons, just gas filled, but the reviews and picturesfor them were pretty solid and they werent that expensive. Around 30. They are comming in the mail soon, so we will see....
however, somone else told me to look at HOENS bulbs for my car, and I went to their website and they look really high quality. Two questions: does anyone know anything of KOBA's? And, two, are hoens good, relaible, etc. Please share your brains with me on this one. Also, are they easy or hard to install?
If there are any other recommendations I would appreciate...I will def be around these forums from now on.
Jeff

Sorry to burst your bubble: But those 'Xenons' you bought are not even charged with xenon gas, nor are they 8000k color temperature.
They are Halogen gas filledbulbs. Nothing more special than factory H7 bulbs. They may be a little more 'blueish' than normal, but thats it.
I have the exact same car as you. I bought OEM HID's from someone selling them outta his wrecked A4. The D2S bulbs, ballasts, computers, ignitors and projectors cost me $400 cdn. (Shipped).Search for Valeo, which is Audi's OEM supplier of HID parts. Other people have had success with aftermarket HID parts, I would recommend staying with OEM parts because the ballasts will mount in position under your headlights. Otherwise, more serious mods are necessary. (Mounting the ballast in another position also opens the possibility of getting it wet.)
Installation was not difficult for the average DIYer. I did the CC mod at the same time.

B,
I understand that. But I also don't want to spend 400 plus dollars on headlights. I will instali them, see how they look, (can't be much worse than the stock lights that came with my car, can they?) Then I might buy some HOENs or PIAA's. Which is better?

For around $200, you can get HIDs.
They'll last you much longer than any fancy halogen and produce around 3 times more light.
PIAA is a very respectible brand; I haven't experienced HOEN.
I personally use Sylvania Silverstars in my car and they're much better than OE replacements and the 'OMGZSOOPAHRICER 8000K XENON HID' bulbs I've had in the past. That being said, I have an HID kit awaiting install.
