looking at an a4
I am looking at getting a 98 1.8T quattro A4. It has 219K miles on it, and the guy wants 3100 for it. He says it had the timing belt changed at 75K and the clutch. It had a starter and battery put in last winter. He is going to put new tires and is having an alignment done in a week, About 175K of the 219K miles were freeway miles from Green Bay to Pittsburgh. He is the second owner, he says he bought it from a buddy thats is a gear head. I am just wondering if it is worth it or not, most A4 i see that are 98's are around 6-7K here in wisconsin so I see it as a bargain but the miles is high. any info would be great thanks.

belt chaned at 75k?? are you sure not at 175K? cuz it way too big interval for this model to change TB, cuz of tensioners they go bad around 80K(as far as i know). Just wondering if he is doing all that maintenance JUST BEFORE sale, maybe he is trying to cover something up or take away attention from bigger problem?

Thats how much they run for here in Michigan as well, im looking at a 1999 A4 with 115,000 miles for $6500 anything cheaper then that has over 150,000 miles and anything with less then 90,000 miles goes for over $7000, I think that if the vehicle is maintained well then the miles dont really matter because I went and looked at a 1999 A4 1.8T with 50,000 miles and the guy was selling it for$6500 but it was obvious hedidnt take care of it well, when he started it up the engine was knocking and it sounded like a tractor. I later on checked out another 1.8T with over 150,000 miles and the guy gave me all his maintainence records the guy babied the car when he started it the engine sounded incredibly smooth. So don't let the miles fool you, as long as the vehicle was maintained well it really shouldnt matter how many miles. The only thing that sucks is if you decide to resell the car it will be harder to sell a vehicle with high miles, high miles really turn people away especially people who dont know anything about carr they base how well a car runs on the milage it has.

well as far as the belt hw actually wrote it was changed 75k ago so I think 220 minus 75 is when he changed it. I wouldn't know if he is covering things up but he says his buddy that he bought it from was **** about maintenance I will try and take a look at it today and see what condition it really is in. Thanks for the info.

Be safe and find out at either option though you should have the belt changed. And damn are you guys paying a lot for a4's.

P.S spawnarcwhy dont you just ask the guy if you can take the car to an audimechnic so it can be checked.

hey domino - let me quess that the a4 with 50k miles you looked at was black with cloth seats, and you met the guy in southfield and that he did not speak good english. Assuming I am right, that car also has a salvage title, that is why his price is so low. I just picked up a 99.5 2.8 quattro manual with all the options 91k miles for 7,000. spotless carfax, car is perfect in every facet.
