Looking to buy an A4, found one...few questions
Alright,
I just sold my other car and stumbled across a 1998 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro TEK Sedan, it has 125,000 miles. I asked the guy when the timing belt was changed as well as hoses and waterpump. He said that it was done around 90,000 miles, the transmission was rebuilt last month as well. They didnt replace the clutch however (he stated that it was in good condition...). He wants 6900$ for it. I am going to inspect the car later today and was wondering is there anything to look for on a used a4? Common issues in the 120,000 mile range? also is this a good deal? seems high mileage for a 1998.
Thanks
Tim

check for any water leakage. these dang cars like to leak coolant. look under the car when hot
and check around the front of the bellhousing or rear of the block for any dripping coolant.
also look in the coolant resevoir. is the level good. is it any different color other than redish.(oil in coolant)
check oil and smell it. is there anything other than oil on the dipstick. like bubbles or frothy looking
substance (coolant in oil)
feel out the suspension. is it squashy feeling. (shocks)
turn hard both ways. any clicking noises or knocks. (ball joints)
look at the lines of the car. like the little gap between the hood and the fender. is it even the whole
way down. if things arent aligned perfectly maybe its been in an accident.
oh yeah if it has a sunroof make sure it works.

I bought my car a few weeks ago - its about the same car you are looking at. You can see the specs in the sig, plus cold weather package, bose stereo.
My car has 80k mi, but the body has some dings and scratches and I got it for around $7k ($6600 but needed tie rod ends and door trim). Your price is pretty decent as long as your body is in better shape than mine.
Check out what toyolla says. I would check out the boots on tie rod ends, cv joints, and control arms if you feel like rolling around in the dirt to check them all out.

I bought my car 2 weeks ago as well I have a 98 1.8T with 122K... runs great but I do have a slight coolant leak as well as a bad control arm and a ripped cv joint boot (all being replaced tomorrow) I got mine for 4K... no quattro tho
+1 Pretty much what everyone said. Thats around the average price for that mileage and year, its no deal though. There are deals out there to be had so if your not in a rush then you might wanna keep looking.
