Default Looking at buying an A4...need tips on what to inspect

I've recently come across an '02 A4, for sale, 1.8T FWD w/ CVT transmission, approaching 60k miles.

I will be taking a look at the car this evening, and would like to get some general pointers as to what to look for when I inspect the car.

Sounds I should be listening for, rattles or shakes, etc.

Thanks in advance! [sm=smiley20.gif]

1. Take it to a mechanic who knows Audis. Ensure the following: 1. Ignition Coil Packs were replaced (recall), 2. Check for Engine "oil sludge" - These are two biggies - If you take the car for a rip and it has a potential sludge problem - you may notice an unusual lack of power - but this is a problem that - if you don't get into the engine and examine it - can manifest itself at any time (in my case - two weeks after I purchased my 2002 A4 1.8T Q with 98,000 Kilometers - I'm in Canada).

2. If possible, ensure you get your hands on service records and check to see that the car was serviced according to the "required" schedule with receipts or the dealer stamp on the service book. This allows you to claim the extended warranty on the engine if there is a "sludge" problem - warranty was extended to 8 years unlimited miles on the engine for sludge problems. But you need to have impeccable records of regular servicing or Audi will blow you off.

I have been told that the CVT on the '02 is a little "funky". I don't know much about this but check for any strange feel or irregular pull on the transmission. This was a problem a friend of mine had with his '02 with CVT - he had it either fixed or replaced by the dealer back in '03.

Other than those just do the usual due dilligence you would do when purchasing any used car.

Good luck.

The guy is asking 15k or best offer. He has also told me there are bi-xenon headlamps swapped in, and he has the S4 wheels on there.

What are these cars going for these days?
