looking at car, ?? common problems...

Hi I am considering buying a ‘01 1.8 turbo Quattro , stick with sport package. I have never bought a car used myself and need some tips. I test drove the car and it was amazing compared to the jeep I have now. I was wondering, what are the common problems to look for when buying a4’s from private parties. The seller is in NYC and I don’t know any mechanics there, and its way to far to go home to my mechanic. The other problemis it has a bad shimmy/ pull to the right. Granted I was driving in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com
ffice:smarttags" /><st1
lace>Manhattan</st1
lace> and the roads are not the best but I found a nice spot on the west side highway opened it up and let go of the wheel. it shook back and forth, and pulled right. I figure this is only an alignment problem, but someone told me it may be a sign of other problems ie and accident or something else. Any tips? the seller is asking a few k below blue book, but he has a good story for that, which does not invole any problems with the car.

sh*t, you should really get it checked out by a mechanic. I think it would be worth the trouble, rather than buying it for 20 something k and finding out its broken. There should be some warranty still left though. Maybe look up an audi dealer or mechanic in the NYC area and schedule a pre purchase inspection and take it to them yourself. If you ask at Audiworld.com, soem people can prob recommend NYC area mechs or dealers for an inspection.

I work work with an Audi mechanic and even though the A4 I bought was 1hr10min away from my house and the mechanic it was worth the trouble becuse he assured me there had not been a major accident and also told me about what was wrong and what would go wrong soon. The salesman was also there, so that added leverage to the haggling.
