Default Malfunction Light

Hey guys,
This mgiht be a loaded question but i need your insight. Yesterday while i was driving at about 15mph my speed started to accelarate without stepping on the gas anymore than i already was. It was wierd. So i tapped my brake and moments later the Malfuntion Indicator light came on. Based on my audi manual and the haynes manual there is something wrong with my Emission control system. 1- Is there anywhere i can go to get a free accurate diagnostic reading? 2 - could the problem be the "vehicle speed sensor"? and 3- am i looking at a lot of $ to get this fixed, because taking this to the audi dealer is my last choice....THanks guys

yeah, there are local shops around, but i refuse to take my car to the nearby audi dealer initially. But thanks guys, if autozone will give me a diagnostic reading for free i'll get the code(s)from them and take it from there.

If you have the money, and a laptop, invest in a vag tool ($70 max)... It will save you lots of time and money in futre diagnostic needs. Otherwise go to Auto Zone, or try to make a friend at Audi.. I agree taking your ride to the Audi dealer is a dumb idea cuz they are rip off/scam artists, as the majority of Auto service places are. Everytime I have ever had a car serviced someplace they always come up with 5 other things that they would recomend doing and try to sell you on, especially the audi dealership. (I never have gotten service at an audi dealer, but my dad did, and im pretty sure he ended up paying for the development of their new showroom, I know he got ripped off all the time.)
