maybe a gas leak?
hey guys i have a problem that whenever i stop and my engine working i smell a strong gas smell in the cockpit and my fan is working .
i figured out that the smell comes from the engine compartment cuz the same smell is around my hood. there may be a leak somewhere but ehere?
i read some articles that the high pressure fuel line connectors might be leaking a little bit, and i need to know where they are and i need some information on how to trace the leak in the fuel system since i don't know which lines are fuel lines or not, under the hood. can anyone help me about it?

and also it happens when my engine warms up, so that i'm suspesting that there may be a small leak and when it drops on the warm engine metal somewhere, it vaporizes and comes out the vents in the cockpit. i heard some peole had the same issues nowadays cuz we all use the heater in the winter time and when you turn the heater off you cannot smell anything since there is no air cming out the vents. BTW i have a 1998 a4 quattro 1.8T
To properly find a gas leak, one needs to prepare accordingly. Leather gloves, face shield, and possibly a welding jacket are essential. Once properly attired, get in the vehicle and turn the key to on position, but do NOT start the car. You only need to have power to the fuel pump. Pop the hood , disconnect the ignition wire, so the vehicle will turn over but not start. Have a friend turn over the engine with the gas floored. Now, get either one of those long BBQ grill lighters or fireplace matches, get a flame going, and start poking around the engine bay. When you see a bright flash, that is where your leak is. Once you have recovered, trace it back to the source and replace the faulty part, as well as any that were damaged during your investigation. Then ask your friend if he thinks you should be nominated for the Darwin awards as an individual, or if the both of you should go as a team.
OK, enough of the smart ***...no offense intended
Run your engine for a bit and shut it off, Then just start sniffing around until you find the strongest odor. Check any fuel related components for dampness and replace.
