Default Miles to Empty Flashing Hours

While I was traveling across country, the "Miles Left to Empty" indicator on my 2005 Audi A4 started flashing 2:00 hours. Subsequentially, every 2 hours the indicator would advance in 2 hr increments (ie: 4:00 hours, 6:00 hours, etc to 14:00 when my trip was completed). After the car sat parked for 12 hrs the indicator was operating correctly when the car was started, indicating that there was 70 miles left till empty.

This was not only very annoying with an indicator on my dashboard falshing continuously for 14 hrs but I did not know how many miles was left on the current tank of fuel.

The owners manual had NOTHING to say about this and of course local Audi dealers will not assist me, unless I bring the car to them. Can anyone please tell me if this is a feature of the A4 or if it was a malfunction?
