mirror discoloration
I know what you are talking about - its turning brown right? Mine is like that, luckily only on the bottom edge so far.

It cannot be fixed - its the anti-fog gel on the back of the mirror that has been exposed to water. The glass piece has to be replaced.

The brown discoloration of both the passenger and driver-side rear view mirrors has also happened to our 1997 A4. The dealer tells me that I have to replace the entire mirror assembly on each side at $200 a pop (ouch)!
Is there any way to replace just the glass? I'd be interested in hearing about non-OEM solutions that have worked for other A4 owners.
Thanks!

You can just pry the glass out of the mirror housing, just be careful not to chip any paint. You could probably get used mirrors from a junk yard for cheap. http://www.car-part.com
