I have a 2001 A4 which comes with 4" speakers, but I want to install a 3-way component set w/ 6.5" woofers. How can I do this? I remember seeing replacement door panels online with cutouts for 6.5's, but I dont think the company makes those anymore. Do I have to have kick panels fabricated? I'd prefer not to interfere with the dead pedal, but if I have to, I will. Please chime in if you have any experience with installing front speakers. Thanks!
RE: Mounting front 6.5" speakers in B5
Even if it weren't a 3-way system (I'll assume a 6.5", 4", and tweeter and not a single speaker with a coaxial mid/tweet) it's going to require some extensive modification and custom work. Something that I would only let a professional such as myself to do.
I am considering doing a write up on putting the 6.5" in my front doors. I am not going to be doing a 3-way system though because I don't feel it's worth all the hassel that would be required.
One of the biggest problems is the speaker mounts to the door panel (usually), and this doesn't allow for very secure mounting surface.

If your going to do a three way componant system like that you will dfinatly need custom work, ( Fiberglass kick panals and new molds for you door panals )
I put a Nice set of MB Quart 4" componants in my Front door panels and had to be creative to mount them, i had to take the stock speakers cut out basket ( just leaving the mounting ring ) and mount the new woofer into the stock ring so that it would mount to the door panel. works great. They sound perfect.
I've done a lot of custom work in the past, if you have any questions let me know.

too much work and money IMO. the bose system has custom brackets, so you can only put a bose speaker in, otherwise your lookin at a custom job. and whats the point? my bose system is loud as hell. i just added some subs and its louder than my old mustang's system which had RF components all the way around with 2 12's. if you need it louder, your going deaf
oh and the front doors are 5 1/4" not 4"

RE: Mounting front 6.5" speakers in B5
I just had a complete system installed in my 98 A4. Sub in the trunk, 6.5's on the rear shelf, 5.25's in the rear doors and 5.25 coax in the front door and separate tweeters in the stock location. It sounds great. It may sound stupid but I bought adapter rings for the front doors from the UK. I got the link from here.

Brandon, did you really have to remove the steering wheel and all driving components in order to get that speaker to fit? If so, I'm not so sure that it was worth it...
