Default Need advice STAT

So, my car's in the shop for throwing the temperature warning, they checked all the sensors and they're fine. He called back a min ago saying my fan clutch went out. When I took it in there, my fan would spin. If the clutch went out, would the fan still spin? does this sound right? I'm supposed to call him back in a minute to let him know what to do. THe part is $160 and he doesn't know about labor yet...

If you are unsure about his honesty, id say go in and have him show you how the clutch isnt working on it. Also have him give you the code for the temp. warning. Where did you take it exactly?? Id call Autozone before he does any work to see what the cost of the part is from them too. Are you mechanicaly inclined? Do you know how much this place charges for labor/hour?? Make sure you call around for prices and do all the math so you arent getting ripped off... After this, id advise to start learning how to work on your car. Youll save a **** ton of $$$ by doing so, and you wont have to worry about disshonest mechanics or pricey labor rates.

If the clutch went out the fan would spin at the same speed of the engine and never cut off as it normally would, plus you can feel the extra lag on the engine. But having the clutch bad wouldn't make it overheat, in actually if everything else works then your car would take a very long time to get up to operating temp. A few ppl I know actually disengage the clutch solenoid to have it constantly on in the summer (on other vehicles). I say look for something else thats at fault. The most common cause of overheating is a leak, it doesn't have to dripping just big enough for the system not to hold pressure. After that check the thermostat, then check the water pump. Sorry about the essay.

Well... I live in a small city in central GA, there aren't any reputable shops that won't rip you a new hole. But there is a guy just outside of town with a VW shop, and I found out he just said VW because there aren't lots of Audi's down here or some crap. He knows what he's doing, but I'm just wary right now. I thought it was a sensor, the temp stays fine. I couldn't find a bad sensor, so I took it to him. By the way, the CEL didn't come on through all of this.

Since we are on the topic, would a bad fan clutch/signal store a fault code??? When my AC is on it just sounds like there is a big fan under my hood that never turns off (until i turn the ac off), but when my ac isnt on i never hear a fan turn on. My running temps are always Ok though.

Just to take it off topic, I just found out my dad's and maybe my sisters cars were broken into last night, meanwhile my baby was locked up in the shop (which acutally has a 24/7 live webcam)...

But yeah, would my fan clutch being out cause the blinking temp warning and no CEL?

Wow gay. I never hear of much car theft over here on the eastside near seattle so thats always a shock to me. Good to hear your ride is safe though.

I don't know if it would give you a code. When my AC is on I can hear the condenser and feel the engine lag. Its probably just that loud condenser.
side note: the easiest way to find out if your fan clutch is bad, get your engine over 4000rpm and turn your turn your wheels to lock and hold it, the fan should go. Don't quote me on that one, seems like Audi likes to design there **** differently than everybody else. Oh yea thats also a good way to bleed the power steering after you replace a pump.

A fan clutch is a mechanical part. It won't throw a code itself, however the effect of having a bad fan clutch may throw codes relating to your cooling system.
