my first audi was in prestine condition for a 1996 and ran without a single problem for the 8 months i had it until a a$$hole t-boned me and wrecked. but for being t-boned at 50mph and having my sister on the side of impact we both walked out without a single scrath which is surprising since my the wood trim almost splintered and the radio poped out and hit my arm. my second audi has had its share of problems but that because the previous owner didnt care for it. now its in excellent condition minus the rock chips form POS trucks and other crap out in the coutry and backwoods where i live. now after almost a year with this B5 im switching to a 1.8t. if your dads getting you a new go for it since itll have a warrenty and such. i highly doubt the dealer will have a B5 on the lot since their apparently old. you might get lucky with finding a nice B6. either way just make sure the T-belt been changed, control arms a plus since mine failed at 150k and cost about 500 in parts and i did my own labour (kinda did half teh work and paid a mechanic 200 to finish the upper arms and alignment)a newclutch also isnt bad. just remeber to religously change the oil and allow proper cool down time after spirited runs espacially with the turbo cars. otherwise these are very nice and reliable cars.
yes go with B5 young one. mine is from 2000 with 80k miles on it, works like a charm and we just replaced the clutch pedal and belts. excellent condition. Just make sure to clean it regularly. I just popped off my wheels after 7 years (mechanics changed them for the seasons) and there was so much break dust it constantly turned my washing stuff black - Clean car = nice
Every car is going to have its fair share of problems, Audis included. I've had my B6 A4 since Dec. 06' with no problems. As long as you take care of the car, it will take care of you. The only people who b*tch about Audis being bad cars are those who have neglected their cars... and when something does happen due to lack of preventitive maintenance, then they blame the car. I do all my own preventitive maintenance, oil changes included. You will, however, have to change the TB around 80k miles... this is the only real issue. Audi claims the TB can be changed at 105k. If the timing belt snaps, you will severely damage your engine, because Audis are interference engines. The cost to repair an engine can run you a couple thousand $.
If you decide on a 1.8t, you will need to use synthetic oil, because the turbo will cook regular dino oil. For modding purposes, the 1.8t will have much more mod potential thana 2.8/3.0 will. The only thing you can do to a 3.0 is to add a supercharger, which will run you about $5k.
Personally, I love my A4, and wouldn't want it any other way.

yes 1.8T = mod heaven. if you replace the clutch make sure you jack up the car high enough to get the transmission on a transmission jack out from underneath your car. ran into that problem, nearly broke my fingers
