Default Need help, local mechanic is useless.

Hey guys, here is my problem...

I have a 2.0 SE 2001 model. When Idle the revs are creeping up to 1k - 1.5k. They have always been a lot lower when idle.

Also the power has gone to ****. Its taking like 20+ secs to get 60mph. 2nd gear is having a fit getting past 30mph if I floor it and 3rd and 4th have the same prob. I would guess its in limp mode but i wouldnt know as ive never ecperienced it before.

I took it the mechanics last week and they said it was running lean and had miss-firing cylinders. They replaced the spark plugs, air filter and fuel trim (whatever that is). They charged me £140 and it hasnt fixed the problem.

The car has done 98K motorway miles and was an ex company car.

What do you guys think the problem could be?

Cheers

p.s. do you think I should get the cam belt replaced seeing as tho its done 80K+ miles?

Vacuum lines is an easy fix. It means that unmetered air is entering the engine and the fuel mixture is incorrect.

I would have the engine scanned for codes and post them here for more help.

I had it scanned when I took it in last week. The codes I can remember where;

16555 P0171 - Fuel Trim,Bank1 System too Lean

16685 P0301 - Cyl.1 Misfire Detected (I think there was actually 4 miss-firing cylinders)

There was also a problem with the clutch switch which was supposedly fixed.

I would say vaccum leak. May be a decent sized one too. It will make your car run lean, and have less power. Also it may increase your idling rpms due to the fact that the engine is trying to compensate for the extra air by adding fuel.

Vaccuum leak is my 1st guess.

A lean condition can be caused by any of the things already mentioned, and also a bad mass airflow sensor.

I was just thinking that!
I wonder if the belt skipped a tooth, and threw the timng off, which will give you no power
and cause the engine to missfire.
Best of luck to you.

Is it still misfiring?

Try swapping the coil pack on number one cylinder with number 2 and see if the misfire moves to the new cylinder.

You didn't mention anything about the coilpacks. You have eliminated the spark plugs, or a dirty air filter as the cause.

This still leaves coilpacks, injectors, or ignition control module as a possible cause of the misfire.

P0171 = system too lean bank 1, possible causes are intake/exhaust leak, AIR system, MAF sensor, fuel pressure/pump, injector(s), HO2S (o2 sensor) the causes are set out by priority so air leak is number 1.

P0301 is a result of the first problem code misfire detected on # cylinder 1 probably due to lean fuel air mix but changing the coils over cant harm anything
