Default Need some advice fuel & fmic

I have a 01 A4 1.8 T 105K miles.Well my gas tank is leaking when I fill it up all the way and it's giving me a cel (sucks only boosting 5psi max). I searched this forum for about 2 hours and I was not able to find anything to help me out. I read that it's very common for it to leak. I guess there is some kind of metal fitting at the top that rusts away and makes it leak. I guess you have to drop the axels to get the tank out.I seen that mosty people took it to the dealership and got it fixed for about 3k. Does the whole tank needreplaced eventhough it's just the top fitting.Really don't want to spend that much money to fix that (I could think of many other ways to spend that kind of money). Has anyone come up with any other solutions. Also I was hoping to get this fixed and try to do some modding to my car. I was looking to get a fmic. Can I run a fmic on a stock turbo. Is it good or bad. Anyone have any advice on where to buy one. Are the ones on ebay junk. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

I can't help you with the fuel leak - I haven't had to deal with that. However, you can use the FMIC on stock boost. It may not give you any gains (I'm not sure), but if you're going to be modding and will eventually need more intercooling, I doubt it will hurt. Here's the DIY article from the DIY forum:

Ive never heard of an Audi w/ a gas leak, particularly an on an A4. A fmic is ok to use w/stock turbo but just make sure the piping is the same size as stock.

You can get a FMIC from a few different places, APR, Greddy etc. You will be ok with it if you get it.

GL on the fuel problem, im sure it wouldnt be hard to fix.

Even the fmic's that ebay sells have proven to work as well as the one's from major suppliers that can cost 10 times as much. They really arent a complicated design, and the materials arent exotic or anything. Ill never understand how most places can charge $900+ for these things.

I would check and make sure that the filler neck has not come off.

You need to consider the reasearch in finding the best core/size for the application. Its not as easy asyou may think. Plus the ebay cores are good to a point. They have a single fin design which is good for small turbos and keeps flow high. But when you increase to a med-large turbo, you really need a denser core, otherwise you would have to have a massive ebay core to cool down the charge and the size alone would have a largerpressure drop than a smaller denser core.

so if you have a ko3/4 and some fab skills, a ebay core is great and can be done very cheapy and effectively. Then you can just splerge on a garrett/pte core when you go larger if you do.

Makes sense. Thanks for all your wisodom TT.

Research and design is a little over rated when it comes to some things though. Still not worth $900+ imo. A test pipe isaprimeexample of how R&D is over rated. $150 (at least) for a pipe with a bend and a couple flanges that is actually worth maybe $20-$30 in materials at most.

Thats because people have and will pay that for a test pipe over and over again. Just look at all the other things you buy that are $10 in parts and $20 in labor that sell for $100+. Its a demand driven market
