Welcome to the forums kellehth, and congrats on the ride. Check out the archives when you get a chance, many topics have been covered extensively. As for your question on the suspension, what are you use to driving? You can put on aftermarket coilovers to limit suspension travel, a sway bar to minimize camber changes in hard cornering or a traction bar to increase chassis stiffness. Check out Bilstein, Koni and Neuspeed.

the only way to get an all around improvement in handling is to replace the springs and shocks/struts

Buy some H&R's, save for the Coilovers, it is well worth the money and the ride quality.

If you have the cash and think you will be needing to occasionally adjust ride height then go for coilovers.
Otherwise a shock/spring combo is the way to go.
If you want to adjust dampening rate (ie. for track days) go with Koni shocks.
Otherwise Bilsteins are the shock of choice for most.

Springs are a whole other matter - depends on what ride height you are looking for.
H&R, Neuspeed, Intrax, Eibach...
