New guy with serious problems with the A4
I have the same shift problem, doesnt happen all the time but it does happen. Sucks *** but eh what can you do. I have a 03 a4 3.0 and yeh none of those other things have happened.
thx for the info. I personally would have never bought an extended warranty for any car but thankfully she did.
If she didn't have the warranty I'd probably do most of the work myself and investigate it a little more. I just figure, it's broke, it's covered, let them mess with it. But it's getting ridiculous now.

Alright, I don't own an 2003 A4 1.8 turbo, my fiance does. I own an 06 Mustang GT modded heavily. I'm somewhat familiar with the A4 and the A6 4.2.
We're having some serious issues with her car, it has 63K, bought new from dealer, Jim Ellis in Atlanta. Luckily she got an extended warranty. Car ran pretty much perfect until about 50K miles, now, every 6 months she takes it in, there's a new problem. And every 6 months, if she didn't have the warranty it would be $1200-$2000 to fix. Here's what's happened:
1. speaker volume goes in/out, dealer replaces, problem still there
2. radiatorproblems -the resevoir doesn't have any fluid, supposidly a leakbut we never saw any fluid on the ground, car runs fine but needs to be fixed anyway, ~$1700
3. intake leak - computer actually reported this one, so knew something was wrong, she takes it in. Bill somewhere around $1000 for a damn intake hose.
4. paddle/stick shift not working - dealer claims can't reproduce, 95% of the time you put it over to manual shift, it won't shift up. This can be resolved by slamming the Hell out of it forward and then it starts working.
-- I'm sure this one will be big money when the decide to change it.
5.latest problem, something to do with power steering leak, extended warranty people tired of paying out so they sent an auditor to inspect, $1800 by insurance but we have to pay the $190 alignment which I'm pretty pissed about.
A) we have to pay for the alignment even though its warranty work
B) why the Hell is an alignmnet so expensive on these cars?
I'm just curious how other A4 owners experiences 50K+ are with their car?
We're getting rid of the car before the warranty is up at 75K and she was thinking of the new A4 butnot sureafter this experience.
My experience has been that Audi makes a great car. We've had all thework done by the dealer.
My Mustang's warranty was voided in 500 miles for most parts in/around the engine but I knew that, I also knew that if it broke, I can do most of the work or have it done pretty cheaply. With the Audi, it's just so expensive.
Curious about people who bought a used A4 and then what problems sprung up on them as well.

I worked as a mechanic at a deal, where we worked on mainly audi, volvo, mb, landrover, ect
enough background
these are things that audis do
to alot of ppl
they are very tricky, those germans, and you being a ford guy, i would say honestly, you would be better of getting her
a mustang to match yours, because thats what i did, traded in my 05 GT modded for a 04 audi, and two months later, the audi at only 41k,. mind you, SNAPPED the timing belt, bent valves, ect! ya, and oh did i mention, they are tying to get out of warranty!
do what your heart says man, wish you the best of luck....
oh, and im keeping my audi, when i get it back, only because i fell in love with it, even tho she fucked me over!
The problem is that the dealership is, how should I put this politely, RAPING YOU.
Radiator problem ( 150 dollars for a replacement and 100 dollars labor (max) and 20 dollars of G12 fluid.
3. Intake leak (intake hose 30 dollars and 30 minutes of labor
Tiptronic shifting - Thhere is a strip of magnets in the shiftier housing that senses the location f the shifter. These sometimes move and shifting gets hard. It is a cheap fix.
4. depending on if it is a leak from a hose or the steering rack it could be a cheap or expensive repair.

WOW!
You guys sound similar to me! My Audi 03 A4 QT was great until I hit 52K. I swear I got a dud.........around me Audi's are known to have the small things go wrong......
Thank god I have the Ext Warranty!
Here it goes:
after 1st week of owning it my computer goes and I need a new one...it was covered
Then the Fuel Inj went (has been recalled)[:-]
Then when I hit around 65-80 i get a noise and shimmy....they blamed it on a balance and alignment.
it came back so they.....
saidmy Rack and Pin (the insuarnce people came to see that too) needed to be replaced[:'(]
They fixed it AND THEN.......
it came back so they claimed to have fixed it again by
replacing leaking P/S lines at the cooler
BUT
as that was happening my engine light came on and when my car rpm'ed to 5K and then to 3K I took him in the dealer
at first they thought it was a Coil in the engine (which VW/Audi won't recall) but when I got it back 3 days later they said it was only a broken Vac. Valve (suction vlave under intake) and called it fixed
I won't take it any where now....I am an avid skier?snowboarder and I love to golf and fish......BUT as a woman in a car driving at time to desolate areas......I just won't in my car anymore.
They claim that the timing belt needs to be done by 90K. Although I have the Ext. Warranty to 100K I may try to get rid of it before then.
Sorry to hear aout your troubles.

i live inkennesaw and i get my car serviced at the audi dealer up in marietta and it seems like its the same way with them, my warranty never seems to cover enough of it or they find something else "wrong" or needs to be fixed nad they take forever to do it.
As others have mentioned, dealers are here to RAPE you.
I had to replace the steering rack in my 96 A4. Total cost was $670, $420 in labor (should have been $350 but I didn't want to argue) and $250 in parts. A dealer would never charge less than 1K for this job.
BTW, I love my Audi!

Change that AUDI for a Realiable car
I'm in Chile South America, and have a problem in my 2003 1.8 Turbo A4 Multitronic (CVT). The transmission stop to working in a red light, and i have to pull the car to the dealer. They believe to be the gear box ECU, and as far i cand search on internet it's a comon failure in this transmissions (as the clutch). My car has 40.000 kilometers, fully maintained in the oficial dealer, and i have found no response untill now. The car has been there for one month and a half waiting for a factory courtesy... How long so i have to wait?... I don't know, but the new ECU cost USD2300,00.- plus hand work at dealer. I think this is a robery.
Last weekI wrote to AUDI.de they reply telling me that the Importer is going to contact me... What for? my car is attheir service and they can't do nothing...
I have found a workshop in the US that said they can fix my ECU. They are AUTOECU.com, and the rebuild cost will be about USD349 whith 3 year warranty (2 more than AUDI factory warrany). What if the fali is not the ECU and is the Clutch?
By now I'm still waiting for my dealer (also the official importer) answer about my car.
Fortunatelly I have other cars now, plus many other before and Never an unsolved problem. This is the first time, and in a soupoused to be "super car (Vosprung Durch Teknik)". What is the diference between AUDI and LADA, YUGO, or Chinesse cars??? Aha!!! THE PRICE (Maybe the others are better)
If any one knows how to get some factory answer and repair, please tell me.
To who is thinking to buying an AUDI... Beware!!! and learn from those (us) who are now in troubles for buying a car with no factory support.
