Default New Owner: '99 A4 w/ APR Chipped ECU?

Hello:

I am a new owner of a 1999.5 Audi A4 with 88k miles. Actually, I bought the car for my wife. It has been a long search, and I was originally looking for an Avant, but this deal came up that was too good to pass up. I paid $3100 for this car with a broken timing belt/bent valves, and got it going for another $2800, including new brakes, so I figure I am not doing too bad here with a nice car for under $6k.

Anyway, my first question concerns the computer chip. The owner listed it as having an "APR chipped ECU". Can anyone tell me more about this, as in where too look for this on the car, and if this should be driven differently, especially since it is for my wife to drive?

1999.5 Audi A4
1.8t
quattro
bose
cold weather package
silver
cloth interior
APR chipped ECU
Tiptronic transmission

Thanks,

Thomas

Just tell her to let it run for 30 seconds in Park before she turns it off. Also might want to crack open that ECU and find out if you have more than one program on the box. If you push and hold the Cruise Set button on my APR'd car, the check engine light flashes and i can switch programs.

It mean you bought a faster car then you had expected.
This is a good thing

This car is entirely new to me, where is the ECU located? Also, does this affect the octane of gas that I must put in?

the ecu is under the hood, under the black plastic piece that covers the battery.....take the hole piece off....on the back right side of the engine compartment there is a black box.....open it with a 8mm wrench....the back one is hard to get to so leave it in and open like a clam shell. As far as the octane, audi says from the factory to use 93 and you should do so with a chip expecially!!!

yep, chances are that is a 93 octane program in there, and putting anything less that in may screw up timing and cause detonation.

Factory says 91 Octane, but APR makes a 93 Octane program

Yeah im pretty sure the owners manual says 91. At the gas stations around here, they usually don't have 93. Its 87, 89, 91.

Might have to find a new gas station! MOST have 87 89 and 91... but you can always find some with 93+

Too bad your 99.5... I want an APR chip -- and I doubt if your wife would miss it
