New Speakers w/ Sub...
Alright, I am going to be upgrading my stereo in my 03 a4 1.8TQ soon and just have a few questions...
First off, I do not have the Bose System and I just have the stock Symphony II head unit.
I was told I have 5.25" speakers in all 4 doors, tweeters in the front 2 doors and 6.5" speakers in the rear back shelf. Does that sound right?
If so, I was just thinking about going out and buying 3 sets of speakers of my choice (leaving the tweeters alone) and just replacing all 6 speakers myself. Am I kidding myself about how straight forward I'm making it? As long as I buy the right size speakers everything should be just fine right?
Secondly, I'm thinking about adding (1) 10" sub to my car. My b6 a4 has a pretty good size cubby in the side of the trunk and I was thinking about putting the sub in that cubby. I really like my trunk space and I don't want a box just sitting in there. A local car stereo place said they could do it but it would be a custom box, so that was fine. They would also mount an amp on the side of the trunk to run the sub and all the other speakers as well. Has anybody put a sub in that cubby? I'm just curious if anybody else has done this?

it depends on what package the car came with from the factory, mine is allmost the same exept I have tweeters in the back doors and a factory sub in the shelf as well, have you tried looking at crutchfield.com, they can tell you what you have in your car.
yeah go to www.crutchfield.com they will have all the sizes for you. Most aftermarket spekers are a 4 ohm setup and I think stock are 2 ohm so there may issues with that. The whole audi stereo setup has made me frown against upgrading mine.
It might be beneficial to actually just see for myself what speaker sizes I have. I'll just have to spend some time to figure out how to get to everything. But now that you mention it I think I have tweeters in the back doors as well. I am just worried about the wiring being the same. I would imagine you just disconnect the factory speaker and connect the new one but this is my first german car (and with built-in tweeters) so I just want to make sure.

If it werent for being setup propritery like I would have already bough speakers and theyd be in now. There is all types of moding to the rear deck and in the process you kill the factory speakers. But then again I have a b5.
Hey Russ, are you just trying to replace your factory speakers or are you also looking to put a sub in that cubby hole in the trunk? Have you asked any of your local car stereo places about it?
Id recomend a powered sub if your looking for a nice stereo without rattling yourself to death. Im currently looking for a place for my powered sub without loosing an inch of trunk space. Im thinking of behind the trunk trim on the sides, from the looks of it it may just fit.
I dont know about you but the powered subs just dont put out enought IMO for a car and trunk that large, I think if you went with the custom set up the shop was telling you about one 10 and a decent amp will make you very happy..... As for door speakers that sounds right and its pretty strait forward but you must have the right ohm load speakers of else you will have issues with overpowering the speakers or underpowering them
A 10 inch sub fits great in the storage cubby on the side of the trunk. If I tried I could have fit a 12" in that space as well, but you need to be careful about the volume requirements for the speaker - read the sub specs carefully.
