Default Newbee - Need purchasing advice

Hi Guys,

I've been reading your forum in hopes of learning more about Audis and specifically the a4.
I'm looking for a second car for my wife to do some light commuting back and forth from work and some weekend jaunts.
No cross country stuff.
I have my eye on a particular car that I'm going to look at today.
It is a 98 a4 2.8 quattro with 122k miles. Upon asking them about maintenance over the phone, they told me that the timing belt was done at 87k, the wheel bearings have been replaced, the throttle body replaced, oill gaskets replaced, car running on synthetic oil. I haven't seen it in person, but pics show that it looks well taken care of.
The owner is selling it at $6700.

Is this a good buy? I plan to have my wife use it for at least 3 to 4 years, but my concern is the high mileage. I assume she would put up to 10k miles a year on it.
Any advice and comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

price seems good, service history is important or receipts of proof but get a tech to check it out 122k on a 8 year old car is average and on the 2.8 its just run in

agree, seems like he has taken care of most of the trouble spots.

At 120K, the 2.8 engine is just getting broken in.

As usual, follow the above advice and have it checked by a VW/Audi mechanic before you put down $$$$.

these cars are great to drive, but are expensive to maintain.

expensive to maintain?? no more than any other car really apart from the quattro/4x4 side which can be an expensive repair and are rarely serviced properly if at all

Oh come on, they are very expensive to maintain for most people. Unless you can do all the work yourself the little things that can go wrong really add up. If I hadn't fixed the problems on my B5 A4 myself the car would have taken up all my money.

Yes true, but Audi dealers tend to milk owners for money a lot more!

hi there,
I have a 98 Audi 1.8t AWD with 160k on it...and I still runs strong, as long as you service the car it will last you well into the 200k's. German cars are like hondas...they just keep on going!
