Default Newbie A4 buyer question

I am looking for a used A4 to use as a 2nd car for the winter. Looking at model years 1999 - 2001 Quattro. Are there certain years to avoid or years that are better than others? How much of a difference is there between the 1.8T and the 2.8 in terms of performance or problems? Anything special to look for in a used A4 with 50-60k miles? It seems a lot of them have already had the timing belt/water pump replaced. Is this a common issue? Thanks for your help.

I would try getting a 99.5 - 2001. Do you plan on modding the car at all ? If so , get a 1.8T as the mod list is endless for it.
The 2.8 is a smooth engine that is more reliable then the 1.8T is most cases. If you can get your hands on one that has already had the timing belt changed that would be good , as this would save you some time and money in the future.
