Default Newbie Air Conditioning Question

Hi there,
Before you flame me, please know that I've already done a search on this topic and read the posts on air conditioning. However, I couldn't find an answer.
I recently moved out to Hawaii and bought a 99 A4 1.8T. The AC is not very strong, ie, it takes a while to get cold, and when it does its not even that cold, even if I have it on recirculate. Granted, typical outside air temp is around 85-90F (not to make yall jealous or anything . Does it sound like a recharge would fix the problem? If so, what kind of refrigerant should I use? I've read differing opinions on whether or not to use R134a in an R12 system.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Default RE: Newbie Air Conditioning Question

your system uses R134a and does sound like it needs a top up.

some legislation
Can I mix Enviro-Safeā„¢ Refrigerant with R-12 or HFC-134a?

For locations within the United States:

NO! Although mechanically there is no risk of incompatibility or damage, there is legislation in place that prohibits such acts. The US EPA prohibits the mixing of ANY refrigerant within the United States. In the United States, it is illegal to mix any two or more refrigerants no matter what brand it is.

For locations outside the United States:

At the time of this publication, Enviro-Safe is not aware of any country, with the exception of the United States, that does not allow mixing of refrigerants. Enviro-Safe does recommend, however, that you research your local, state and/or federal laws concerning refrigerant.
