Default Newbiw w/Gas Tank Problem

Hi everyone - it's yet another newbie!

Just picked up my 98 A6 2.8 Quattro 2 weeks ago. 80,000 miles. After 6 days discovered strong gas odor after filling tank and parking in garage (already drove it 1,400 miles transporting it home - car never sat with more than a half tank of gas). Learned next day there is a crack in a side seem of plastic tank. Has been setting ever since. Will require LOTS of labor time - may need to remove suspension to get at tank.

Any one know where to get a tank? Any other suggestions? Any estimate what this can cost - my licensed repair facility charges $45/hour? Most sites doNot sell aftermarket tanks. Love the car - flawless other than this problem. Pretty sure seller (a wholesaler in FL) could/did not know about the problem. I don't hold her responsible.

welcome to the forum. Are you looking for a new or used tank?

It may cost quite a bit. If your cars a quattro, the entire rear subframe will probably have to come out.

Sorry for the delay responding. Thought I would get an e-mail informing of a response. I am looking for either a new or used gas tank. Found a used tank at Dads Auto Dismantling (dadsauto.com) for $250 - another $250 for filler neck if needed. Don't know if I should trust a used tank. After all, alot of time (i.e., labor) to drop the suspension to even get at the tank to replace. Don't need another gas tank problem - but what's the chance of that happening a 2nd time?!

not very likely.. but if you have the extra cash to throw into a new tank then do it.. maybe you could ask Dads if they could inspect it prior to shipping they are good people.. im sure they wont sell you something that is crap

Welcome to the forums!!!!

Thanks, Redgoat, for the insight. I agree, it's not very likely to happen again. New tank from Audi is $875 for the V-6 model - close to $1,300 for a V-8. Thank God for V-6's. $250 is looking better and better!! Thanks again.
