no hot air
I have a 96 a4q and now that it is cold out, i turned the heat on and none came out. just the regular cold outside air came in.....this was happening at the end of last winter and sometimes the air would be hot like it should be. do you guys have any suggestion or ideas on whats wrong and how i will need to get it fixed? much would be appreciated
Is your coolant level proper?
There may be air in the system, since you say it is intermittent. Does the car overheat?
Check the level, bleed the air out of the system, and see if that helps.
If not, it may be a bad or clogged heater core, a beotch to change, but there are writeups.

Possible causes
1. Coolant thermostat stuck open. The car will take a long time to heat up and the coolant gauge will be lower than the middle of the gauge. Fix - replace thermostat
2. Blocked heater core - This can be due to sludge, rust or air. With the car warmed up and the heat on, feel the coolant lines going through the firewall to the heater core. They should both be hot. If they are not then something is blocking the hot coolant from going to the heater. If they are both hot then
3. Could be flap valve. The motors on these can burn out and thus air is not difected over the heater core. Check the HVAC system with a vagcom.
4. All the above assumes that if you set the fan to manual it responds and blows.
