i believe the 170hp motor has less gains when you start modding (i may be wrong, i'm no expert)...and aren't the 01s the most common year for sludge problems?
I'm not sure about the gains, but i know that my chip made a HUGE difference. And as for problems, I dont have many...

i wondered what years were affected by the sludge the worst.

my 2001 doesnt show a lick of sludge under the valve cover, so aslong as you keep up with a good quality oil change every 3k no worries

Same here, besides changing the normal wear and tear parts.. As far as any other problems, I've been lucky enough not to have any.. =)

I don't have any sludge under my valve cover. I change the oil every 10,000 mi. with Mobil 1 0W-40. I have 85K mi. , only repair a rear wheel bearing.

01 and 02 is the same engine really. The body style changes from those years and IMO I feel the B5 (96-01) is a better looking car.

I also agree the b5 is the better looking, performing car. The aeb (97-99.5) has the big port head, as well as drive by cable (easier to tune) the newer ones did have 20 more hp but once chipped or ko4'd they are about the same
