Noobie wants an A4 but why all the bashing??
fajimr- Excellent questions.
Just for kicks. Depending on the year, the A4 and A6 share the V6 2.8 motor. The V6 doesn't have a turbo, so there's less parts to go wrong. When the 1.8t needs to visit the mechanic, it's typically caused by a leak in the turbo system.
Here's a short list of things I have replaced on my 1.8t-
Timing belt (I didn't have the service records $650)
4 Differential seals ($50 each)
Both rear wheel bearings ($160 each with labor)
Coolant temp sensor ($20)
All the vacuum lines (cheap to replace and don't take very long)
Rear control arm ($70)
Some other things that are somewhat common-
CV axle boot
Gas tank sending unit ($70 I need to change mine [:@])
Coil packs (about $30 each)

The dealer I talked to said he could get the timing belt/tensioner/water pumped changed for his cost: 700.00 which I would have to pay for as I already got him down 1k on the price.
($7995 for an 99 A4 Quattro Avant 1.8, 74K miles, with cloth interior, clean exterior, good tires).

Depending on where you're located, you might be able to get another Audi enthusiast to do it for some beer.

hehehe some don't See the SEARCH function but then again I didn't when I joined the really good site so I guess we have to persevere, all questions deserve an answer even if it points to the link on the search

Those parts don't cost $700. You can get all the required parts for $270 at ECS Tuning (bottom of the page). Labor is about 3-3.5 hours.

, my high school days working on my Chevelle SS396 and my other friends cars and college daze working on my VW... jeez these days when I open the hood to a car I don't even know where to begin- but if you gave me enough time I could probabyl find the battery...maybe. These days time is so damn precious that I think I'd let someone else do the job and pay them for their time... if that is in beer, all the better! (just moved to montreal and we have some GREAT beer here). Thanks for all the suggestions. Rather than jump into it so quickly, I'll wait to get one from an enthusiast who knows how to take care of one of these babies! Maybe extend my search and consider flying out to get something.
cheers all, jim
Had my car now for almost a year, A bunch of things have went wrong with it...
IE...
Control arms (500 something from ECS tuning)
Had my car have the timing belt done when I bought it... (the guy kicked *** Eric Nordsrtom from Carlisle area PA..)
ICM-175 (unless you do some looking for one online 80 bucks then wink)
Coolant Temp Sensor (20 bucks...)
Fuel filter (please remember to change this everything 20000 miles its nice)
Still have yet to fix:
Turn signal relay (junk yard 2.50 cents)
Fuel gauge sender...(70 something bucks)
Honestly... Not bad.. Just take care of your car, and if you have the brains do them yourself... But too this day I still do not suggest trying to do the control arms... HOLY HELL

For the 1.8t oil sludge is a problem. Use one of the following
