Noobie wants an A4 but why all the bashing??
o.k. here is a question.. I was thinking that if I were to buy at a distance from an audi owner, I would have them bring the car into a audi dealership and have them to an inspection on it and then fax me the results. (I was thinking dealership as they might be more objective/honest and have more of a reputation on the line).
is this a valid way of getting an interim look at the car before I jumped on plane, bus or rented a car to check out a possible purchase?
thanks
jim

You could also post in the regional forums to see if an AF member would take a look at it for you.
Or find a dealer near the seller and have them drop the car of, like you suggested.
Then, call the dealer, give them your CC# to pay for the inspection, and ask them to fax you the results.
That sounds like a pretty good plan if you find one you are really interested in from afar.

thanks.. o.k. one LAST question (for today at least)......
I've noticed on some audis that they mention timing belt replacement (good!) but also a head rebuild. Is this usual? Does it mean that something out of the ordinary happened or is it a preventative measure???
you can't imagine how much i appreciate your help! thanks again... beer for all (or at least anyone who comes to montreal to claim it)

Geez, if the head was rebuilt, that kind of suggests that maybe the t-belt broke and screwed up some valves.
Its not a normal thing to have done, unless they really f*cked up the engine somehow.
Usually with t-belt, you would do the tensioner, the waterpump impellar, thermostat, and all the other belts, v-belt, water pump belt and AC belt.
Good luck in your search.
Its 5:00, I'll take that beer now. Actually, its a lot closer to drive home and grab a Bass ale out of the fridge, but thanks for the offer. If I ever make it up there to go skiing, I'll come get the beer!

thanks... maybe I'll think twice about that one. I'm car-less right now but since there is no snow here, I'm not too worried...
